Enrolled Agents are to taxes what CPAs are to accounting. Just as CPAs have to know all about accounting and audits, Enrolled Agents have to know all about taxes. Enrolled Agents are more than just tax preparers; they have earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service and other taxing authorities.
Enrolled Agents must pass a demanding 3-part exam administered by the IRS which covers all aspects of tax knowledge, as well as a background check, also conducted by the IRS. 72 hours of continuing professional education are required every three years. Because of these demanding requirements, there are only about 48,000 Enrolled Agents in the United States currently recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.
